The part
Flapper, fill valve, flush valve, supply line and wax ring are all small parts and short labor. A flange repair, a pressure-assist tank rebuild, or a wall-hung carrier part is more.

A running toilet in a New York City building is a few hundred gallons a day, on a metered water bill the building pays, in a co-op where the water and sewer charges get divided among the shareholders. In a house in Queens it is your bill, and it doubles. And a toilet that leaks at the base in an apartment above someone else's bathroom becomes their ceiling within a week.
NYC Plumber Co repairs toilets the way this city's bathrooms need. Prewar buildings still have wall-hung tanks with flush elbows, toilets set on lead bends and cast iron flanges that have rusted to nothing, supply lines coming out of the wall at angles no modern kit fits. Newer buildings have pressure-assisted units, wall-mounted toilets with in-wall carriers, and low-flow models that need a specific flapper and a specific fill height to flush properly. We carry the parts for all of it.
Most repairs finish in one visit. When the toilet is cracked, the porcelain is crazed, or the flange underneath is gone, we say so and price a replacement with the toilet that fits the rough-in, the water pressure and the building's rules.
What it is doing
Running, ghost flushing, weak flush, rocking, leaking at the base, leaking at the tank, clogging. Each one points to a different part, and we ask so the plumber arrives with it.
Shut off and inspect
Supply valve closed, tank drained, fill valve, flapper, flush valve, tank bolts, supply line and base inspected. Dye in the tank to confirm a silent leak into the bowl.
Check the flange and the floor
A rocking toilet or a stain at the base means the wax ring failed, often because the flange is broken or set too low. We look before we reset.
Written price
Repair, or replacement if the toilet or the flange is beyond it, with both numbers side by side when it is close.
The repair
Parts replaced with the ones made for the model. Flange repaired or replaced, new wax ring or waxless seal, toilet reset and bolted, supply line and angle stop replaced if they are old.
Test
Multiple flushes, fill height set, no movement at the base, no drip at the supply, dye test passed.
Cleanup and advice
Floor cleaned, old parts removed, and a straight answer on how much life the toilet has left.
Running and ghost flushing. A flapper that no longer seals, a fill valve that will not shut off, a float set too high so water spills into the overflow all day. The dye test finds it in two minutes. The parts cost less than a week of the water they save.
Weak or incomplete flushes. Mineral buildup in the rim jets, a flapper closing too early, a low-flow toilet paired with the wrong flapper, or a partial clog in the trap. In older buildings with low pressure on upper floors the fill takes forever and the flush suffers. We fix what can be fixed and tell you when the toilet itself is the problem.
Clogs. A single stubborn clog is a closet auger. A toilet that clogs every week is either a defective toilet, a partial obstruction in the closet bend, or the stack behind it. When it is the line, our drain cleaning plumbers take over.
Leaks at the base. A failed wax ring, a cracked flange, a toilet rocking on an uneven tile floor. Water at the base means water under the floor, and in an apartment that means the neighbor. We reset properly and repair the flange rather than doubling up wax rings.
Tank and bowl leaks. Tank-to-bowl bolts corroded, a spud washer failed, a hairline crack in the tank from an overtightened bolt. Some are a gasket. A cracked tank or bowl is a replacement.
Supply lines and shutoffs. The braided line and the angle stop behind the toilet fail with age and cause some of the worst floods we see in this city. Replaced during any repair if they are more than ten years old.
Flapper, fill valve, flush valve, supply line and wax ring are all small parts and short labor. A flange repair, a pressure-assist tank rebuild, or a wall-hung carrier part is more.
When a toilet is cracked, wobbling on a destroyed flange, or a 1980s 3.5-gallon unit in a building on a metered bill, replacement makes sense. We price it with the toilet that fits your rough-in and your pressure.
A broken cast iron flange on a lead bend in a prewar building is a real repair. Tile that has to come up to reach it adds more.
Standard two-piece units are simplest. Wall-hung toilets with in-wall tanks, pressure-assisted units and bidet toilets take specific parts and more time.
An overflowing toilet at night in an apartment above someone else is emergency plumbing at the after-hours rate. A running toilet is a scheduled visit.
Prewar toilets sit on a lead closet bend with a flange that has rusted or cracked. Setting a new toilet on it without repairing it is how the base leaks again in a year. We rebuild the flange or replace the bend.
Roof tank buildings and old risers deliver slow fills on the top floors. Some toilets never flush right on that pressure. We match the toilet to the building.
Many buildings require a licensed plumber for any toilet work, a certificate of insurance, and a low-flow model on replacement. We know the requirements in the Upper West Side and Midtown buildings we service.
Ten-inch and fourteen-inch rough-ins, corner toilets, bathrooms where the door barely clears the bowl. We measure before we order.
Food coloring in the tank, wait 15 minutes, look in the bowl. Color means a flapper leak and a water bill you do not need.
Braided supply lines and the angle stop behind the toilet are cheap, and their failure is expensive. Ten years is a fair life.
"Flushable" wipes clog closet bends and building stacks across the city. Every super in New York has a story. Trash can.
Tank bolts and closet bolts cracked by an enthusiastic wrench are one of the most common causes of a replacement nobody wanted.
Fill valves, flappers and flush valves matched to the toilet, so the flush works the way it was designed to.
A broken flange gets repaired or replaced before the toilet is reset. Stacked wax rings are a leak with a delay.
And when it is, a toilet that fits the rough-in, the pressure and the building's rules, installed and hauled away in the same visit.
Certificates of insurance and licensed-plumber requirements for co-ops and rentals, sent before the visit.
