Tribeca's plumbing was designed for butter, eggs and textiles. The cast-iron and brick warehouses on Greenwich, Hudson, Franklin and Duane Street were built with one or two stacks, a freight elevator and a sink on each floor. Then the 1970s and 80s turned them into lofts, and every floor became an apartment with a kitchen in the middle of the plan and a bathroom wherever the owner wanted it, sometimes 50 feet from the nearest stack. That is the origin of most of the drain calls we get in the neighborhood.
The buildings that followed - the 1990s and 2000s conversions, then the new towers along the river and the West Side Highway - have the opposite problem.
